Tsunami

A massive tsunami rolled across the Pacific at 500mph, which it give reference, is as fast as a jet, this was a cause of the earthquake. The bighest waves were moer than 6-7ft, this was recorded in California. Strong waves hit Japan's Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, damaging dozens of coastal communities. A 10m wave struck Sendai, deluging farmland and sweeping cars across the airport's runway. Fires broke out in the centre of the city This tsunami ended up hitting Hawaii and the US West Coast, but there were no reports of major damage from those regions. Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate coastal areas in the states of California, Oregon and Washington. A tsunami warning extended across the Pacific to North and South America, where many other coastal regions were evacuated. The alert was later lifted in most parts, including the Philippines, Australia and China.

  1. The wave was only 6-7 feet, why does that not sound very large?

  2. I know a 6 foot wave does not seem to be massive or do much damage, but when it is coming at a shore at 500mph the wave has a major impact.

  5. What damages did it cause to Hawaii in some of the US because you had said the waves had hit them a little bit?

  6. Well Linsey, if I was in Japan when this happened I could possibly be dead or lost. So I really dont know how I would react if I was there.

Shawnee, the earthquake did not have and major impacts on the U.S. The waves only hit the shores and nothing else.

  10. Raheem, no other countries were effected. The impact was on Japan only.
Liz, no one knows that answer for sure. Most say that it will take many years, even a decade to get Japan fully recovered and back to the way it was before.
